Sandford Island

Sandford Island (48˚52'00" 125˚10'00" E side of Imperial Eagle Channel, SW of Fleming I, Barkley Sd, W side of Vancouver I). After surveyor and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming. See Fleming Bay. Besides his many other achievements, Fleming was a great supporter of a trans-Pacific telegraph cable from Canada to Australia and NZ, which was completed in 1902. Apparently the cable, which had its Canadian terminus at Bamfield, ran just past the S end of this island. Formerly known as Hill I.
