Saltery Bay


Saltery Bay (49˚47'00" 124˚10'00" N of Nelson I, N side of Jervis Inlet, SE of Powell R), Saltery Bay (49˚52'00" 126˚49'00" N end of Nootka I, Esperanza Inlet, W side of Vancouver I). Salteries were primitive packing plants that used salt to preserve fish—usually salmon or herring. The HBC preserved salmon this way at Ft Langley and Ft Simpson, both for local use and for export; the fish were cleaned and trimmed, then split lengthwise and packed in large barrels between layers of salt....
