Portland Canal


Portland Canal (55˚15'00" 130˚00'00" Northern extension of Portland Inlet along the BC-Alaska boundary to Stewart), Portland Inlet (54˚44'00" 130˚24'00" NE of Chatham Sd, N of Prince Rupert). Capt George Vancouver named the canal in July 1793 after William Henry Cavendish Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland (1738–1809). He was a figurehead PM of Britain, briefly in 1783 and again in 1807–9, and occupied several other cabinet positions during his career, including home secretary (1794–1801)...
