Porlier Pass


Porlier Pass (49˚01'00" 123˚35'00" SE of Nanaimo, between Galiano I and Valdes I, Gulf Is). Boca de Porlier was named by Spanish naval officer José Maria Narváez on his historic 1791 examination of the Str of Georgia—the first by a European explorer. Antonio Porlier y Sopranis, Marquis of Bajamar, was Spain’s minister of justice at the time of Narváez’s voyage. The name, misspelled on charts as Portier Pass for many years, was corrected by the Geographic Board of Canada in 1905....
