Oriflamme Passage


Oriflamme Passage (54˚35'00" 130˚40'00" Between Green I and Connis Rks, Chatham Sd, NW of Prince Rupert). Named for the US paddle steamer Oriflamme, which was built in 1864 at Brooklyn, NY, as a gunboat for the US Navy but never commissioned, as the end of the Civil War reduced the need for warships. The 70-m, 1,179-tonne vessel was sold and worked briefly on the China coast before being bought in 1866 by Benjamin Holladay’s Oregon Steamship Co and run between San Francisco and Portland....
