Monks Islet


Monks Islet (49˚14'00" 126˚01'00" W end of Calmus Passage, N of Vargas I, Clayoquot Sd, W side of Vancouver I). Named in 1934 for Harold Monks (1893–1974), who came to Clayoquot Sd from England in 1914, lured by letters he had exchanged with a distant relative, and pre-empted land on the NW side of Vargas I. He built a shack, worked on the corduroy road across the island and also found employment on the seine boats belonging to the Clayoquot Sd Canning Co. Monks went overseas in the latter...
