Monarch Head

Monarch Head (48˚46'00" 123˚06'00" E of Bruce Bight, S side of Saturna I, Gulf Is). Named by RN surveyor Capt George Richards about 1858 after HMS Monarch, which served on the Pacific Station, 1854–57, as the flagship of Rear Adm Henry Bruce. The 84-gun, 2,073-tonne line-of-battle sailing ship was built at Chatham in 1832 and modelled on the French vessel Canopus. While in PNW waters it was under the command of Capt George Patey. The Monarch was decommissioned in 1866.
