Mink Island


Mink Island (50˚06'00" 124˚46'00" Desolation Sd, NE end of Str of Georgia, NW of Powell R). Named by Admiralty surveyors about 1861 in association with nearby Otter I and Martin Is after local fur-bearing animals (though Martin should really be Marten). In 1945, because another Mink I existed only 60 km away in Cordero Channel, regional hydrographer Henri Parizeau changed the name to Repulse I, after HMS Repulse, the Pacific Station flagship, 1872–77.
