McGowen Rocks


McGowen Rocks (52˚38'00" 129˚26'00" SW of the Moore Is, off W side of Aristazabal I, Hecate Str). Lance Cpl John McGowan (as his name is more commonly spelled) was a member of the Columbia detachment of the Royal Engineers, which served in BC from 1858 to 1863. He came out from England on the Thames City with the main body of men and arrived at Esquimalt in 1859. McGowan remained in BC after the detachment disbanded and married Mary Watt at New Westminster in Nov 1863. Little else is known...
