Marina Island


Marina Island (50˚04'00" 125˚03'00" Off SW side of Cortes I, N end of Str of Georgia), Marina Reef (50˚02'00" 125˚03'00" S of Marina I). The island was named in 1792 by the Spanish explorers Dionisio Alcalá-Galiano and Cayetano Valdés, in association with nearby Cortes I. Hernán Cortés, Spanish conquistador, acquired Doña Marina (also known as La Malinche or Malintzin) as an Aztec slave and made her his mistress and interpreter.
