Lion Island


Lion Island (49˚10'00" 123˚00'00" Off the W tip of Annacis I, Gravesend Reach, lower Fraser R). In 1884, early entrepreneur Alexander Ewen built a large cannery here, traces of which can still be seen. He became a major player in the BC cannery trade and served as president of the BC Packers Assoc, 1901–7. The name of the island may refer to the Lion brand of sockeye salmon produced at this plant.
