Kunghit Island


Kunghit Island (52˚06'00" 131˚05'00" SE of Moresby I, QCI). Kunghit is a modification of the ancient Haida First Nation name for the very S end of the QCI and may mean “to the south.” In 1853, when Houston Stewart Channel was surveyed by the officers of HMS Virago, George Inskip, the ship’s master, named the island after Cdr James Prevost, the ship’s capt.
