Kinahan Islands


Kinahan Islands (54˚12'40" 130˚24'19" Chatham Sd, just S of Digby I and SW of Prince Rupert). Named in 1867 by Lt Daniel Pender after Richard George Kinahan (b 1837), 1st lt of HMS Malacca, who served on the BC coast in 1866–68, under Capt Radulphus Oldfield, and was based at Esquimalt. He was promoted to capt in 1877, and his commands included HMS Orontes, Sapphire and Terror. Kinahan achieved the rank of vice adm, retired, in 1898.
