Kelly Island


Kelly Island (49˚42'31" 124˚12'35" W of Nelson I, E side of Malaspina Str, NW of Vancouver). Martin Kelly pre-empted the island in 1899 for use as a stone quarry and received a Crown grant for it in 1911. From 1903 to 1908 the Vancouver Granite Co based its operations there. Kelly and his business partner, a man named Murray, supervised the actual quarrying, breaking the stone out by hand and loading it on barges from an inclined tramway.
