Hughes Passage


Hughes Passage (48˚35'00" 123˚17'00" Between Sidney I and D’Arcy I, Gulf Is), Hughes Rock (50˚15'00" 127˚53'00" W entrance to Klaskish Inlet, Brooks Bay, NW side of Vancouver I). William Otas Hughes (1848–1910), from Digby, NS, came to BC in 1891 with his second wife, Adeline Ophelia Hughes (1859–1942), and family. An experienced seaman, he soon found skilled work in the sealing industry and was skipper of the Carmolite when it was seized for illegal hunting in Russian waters in 1892....
