Hovel Bay


Hovel Bay (50˚40'00" 124˚52'00" E side of Bute Inlet, N of Orford Bay, NE of Campbell R). Named in 1924 after John Hovel (1841–1924), a Norwegian sailor who jumped ship in BC in the 1880s. He pre-empted land and settled in this vicinity in the early 1900s and lived here in a floathome until his death, surviving as a trapper, prospector and handlogger.
