Hernando Island


Hernando Island (49˚59'00" 124˚55'00" NW of Savary I, NE end of Str of Georgia). Named in 1792 by Spanish explorers Dionisio Alcalá-Galiano and Cayetano Valdés in association with nearby Cortes I. Hernán Cortés (1485–1547), a Spanish conquistador, overthrew the Aztec empire in southern Mexico and initiated the Spanish colonization of the Americas.
