Helby Island


Helby Island (48˚51'00" 125˚10'00" W side of Trevor Channel, Barkley Sd, W side of Vancouver I). Named in 1861 by Capt George Richards for Lt Cdr Alfred Prowse Hasler Helby (1828–1902), who commanded the small steam-powered gunboat Grappler on the BC coast, 1860–62. He brought the vessel out from England to Esquimalt and was relieved two years later by Lt Cdr Edmund Verney.
