Grief Point

Grief Point (49˚48'00" 124˚31'00" NE side of Malaspina Str, at S end of city of Powell R). Named, according to historian Athelstan Harvey, because it is an exposed spot in a westerly wind, causing grief to many a mariner. The Sliammon First Nation name for this feature is Xákwuhem (Achquam), which refers to the cow parsnip that once grew here in abundance. The point, protected from SE winds, was a valued Sliammon camping and garden site.
