Gore Island


Gore Island (49˚39'00" 126˚24'00" Near W end of Muchalat Inlet, Nootka Sd, W side of Vancouver I). John Gore (1730–90), a native of Virginia, had joined the RN as a midshipman by 1755. He was a junior officer on Capt James Cook’s first voyage, in 1768, and served again, as 1st lt of HMS Resolution, on Cook’s third voyage in 1776. He was thus present on the BC coast at Nootka Sd in 1778. When Cook was killed at Hawaii and Capt Charles Clerke became cdr, Gore took over HMS Discovery....
