Gallows Point


Gallows Point (49˚10'00" 123˚55'00" S end of Protection I, Nanaimo Hbr). Two Cowichan (Quw’utsun’) First Nation men, Sque’is and Siam’a’sit, were hung here in 1853 after being found guilty of murdering an HBC shepherd at Lake Hill the previous Nov. The pursuit of the criminals, led by Gov James Douglas himself, was an early demonstration of British power.
