Fernie Island


Fernie Island (48˚40'47" 123˚23'38" E of Saanich Peninsula, N of Sidney). Peter Creeke Fernie (1830–1915) was a S Saanich pioneer. He came to Canada from England in 1862 after serving in the British Army, 1848–61, as a Royal Horse Artillery sgt and seeing service in the Crimean War and India. In BC he prospected and farmed and at one time owned a portion of the present Butchart Gardens property.
