Fegen Islets (49˚32'00" 124˚23'00" Off NW side of Lasqueti I, Str of Georgia). Capt Edward Stephen Fogarty Fegen, VC (1891–1940), a native of Hampshire, was cdr of the armed merchant cruiser Jervis Bay when the N Atlantic convoy it was guarding was attacked in Nov 1940 by the pocket battleship Admiral Scheer. Without hesitation, the aging Australian liner, armed with obsolete six-inch guns, engaged the powerful German raider for all of 24 minutes before sinking. Its suicidal delaying tactic...
