Explorer Bay


Explorer Bay (54˚14'00" 132˚58'00" NE side of Langara I, QCI). US coastal and geodetic survey vessel Explorer, under Capt Walter Dibrell, was charting S Alaskan waters in 1907 at the same time that Capt Frederick Learmonth, who named this feature, was doing survey work with HMS Egeria. The 41-m, 304-tonne Explorer was built at Wilmington, Delaware, in 1904 and suffered a bad collision with the Indianapolis in Seattle Hbr in 1907, in which two crew members were killed.
