Echachis Island


Echachis Island (49˚07'39" 125˚56'21" W side of Templar Channel, SW of Tofino, Clayoquot Sd, W side of Vancouver I). The name of the important former Tla-o-qui-aht (Clayoquot) First Nation summer village on this island has been translated as “land elevated above the surface of the ocean.” Many spelling variations have been recorded, including Aachaches, Echachets and Ich’aachist. The site was used by the Tla-o-qui-aht as a major fishing station and whaling centre. W
