Cape Lazo


Cape Lazo (49˚42'00" 124˚52'00" NE of Comox Hbr, Str of Georgia). In his 1791 exploration of the Str of Georgia, Spanish naval officer José Narváez, aboard Santa Saturnina, named this feature Punta de Lazo de la Vega. While historian Capt John Walbran speculated that the name was somehow based on the appearance of the cape (lazo being a Spanish word for trap, and vega meaning “plain”), it seems more likely that Narváez was referring to a person.
