Bate Point


Bate Point (49˚10'45" 123˚56'00" S point of Newcastle I, Nanaimo Hbr). Mark Bate (1837–1927) was born at Birmingham, UK, and arrived in 1857 on the BC coast, where he began working for the HBC at Nanaimo as a cashier. He joined the Vancouver Coal Co when it purchased the HBC’s Nanaimo holdings in 1862, and served as manager, 1869–84. From 1886 to 1913 he was government agent for Nanaimo.
