Barney Rocks


Barney Rocks (49˚21'00" 126˚17'00" W of entrance to Hot Springs Cove, between Nootka Sd and Clayoquot Sd, W side of Vancouver I). “Barney” was the nickname of the unfortunate Peter Cornelius, a Maltese trader who worked at Kyuquot as a storekeeper for pioneer merchants William Banfield and Peter Francis. In 1855, while travelling by canoe to Clayoquot Sd, he and several of his Ka:’yu:’K’t’h (Kyuquot) First Nation companions were murdered by rival tribe members off Estevan Point....
