Ballenas Channel


Ballenas Channel (49˚20'00" 124˚10'00" W side of Str of Georgia, E of Parksville), Ballenas Islands (49˚21'00" 124˚09'00"), Ballenas Trough (49˚15'00" 123˚43'00" N of Gabriola I). Ballenas is the Spanish word for whales. The islands were named in 1791 during an exploration of the SW Str of Georgia by Spanish pilot José Narváez in the Santa Saturnina. A lighthouse was built on the S island in 1900, then transferred to the N island in 1912. Both channel and islands were long shown...
