Balch Islands


Balch Islands (53˚14'00" 132˚05'00" N of Maude I, Skidegate Inlet, QCI). Lafayette Balch (1825–62), a native of Maine, founded the Washington state community of Steilacoom in 1850 and established a brisk trade shipping lumber to San Francisco. In Jan 1852, with the schooner Demaris Cove, he rescued the crew and passengers of the schooner Georgianna in Skidegate Inlet.
