Arakun Islands


Arakun Islands (49 ̊11'00" 125 ̊53'00" S end of Lemmens Inlet, Meares I, Clayoquot Sd, W side of Vancouver I). The word “raccoon” is derived from the Virginia Algonquian First Nation word for this animal—arakun or aroughcun— which means “he scratches with his hands.” These geographic features were formerly known as the Raccoon Is, but were changed by the hydrographic service in 1947 to avoid duplication.
