Teit, James Alexander


TEIT, James Alexander, ethnographer (b 1864, Shetland Islands, Scotland; d 30 Oct 1922, Spences Bridge). He arrived in BC in 1884 to help at his uncle's general store in SPENCES BRIDGE and the work brought him into contact with the local NLAKA'PAMUX (Thompson) people. He married a Nlaka'pamux woman, Lucy Antko (she died in 1899) and became active in the struggle for ABORIGINAL RIGHTS, helping to form the Interior Tribes of BC and the BC Indian Rights Assoc.
