Simoom Sound

SIMOOM SOUND, 75 km east of PORT HARDY between KINGCOME INLET and Fife Sound, was the site of a floating LOGGING camp (see also FLOATHOUSES), in the early 1900s. The post office, in John Dunseith's general store, was moved to the west side of GILFORD ISLAND in 1936 and then to nearby Echo Bay in 1973 but retained its Simoom Sound name. Echo Bay is a tiny FISHING, logging and TOURISM settlement, site of a school (1929), hotel (1933) and FOREST SERVICE station (1950–68).
