SERVICE, Robert, writer (b 16 Jan 1874, Preston, England; d 11 Sept 1958, Lancieux, France). The "Bard of the Klondike" immigrated to Canada in 1896 and lived near DUNCAN on VANCOUVER ISLAND from 1896 to 1903, working as a farm hand and ranch hand. He began university studies in VICTORIA in 1903 to prepare for a career in teaching but quit almost immediately and began working for the Canadian Bank of Commerce.
