Natal

NATAL, a COAL mining town in the E KOOTENAY, 40 km north of FERNIE, began in 1907 and thrived until it was abandoned in the 1960s in favour of the new community of SPARWOOD. The site was bulldozed and later occupied by a large open-pit mine operated by TECK CORP. The name, which was conferred following the Boer War, refers to a province of S Africa.
