MOYIE  () , pop 617, overlooks Moyie Lk in the E KOOTENAY, 31 km south of CRANBROOK. David THOMPSON passed by in 1808. From 1893 to 1929 it was the site of the St Eugene lead–SILVER mine discovered by a local KTUNAXA man, Pierre Ironhead, or Indian Pete, and developed by James Cronin. The CPR's Crowsnest line arrived in 1898 and the town had a population of more than 800, most of whom drifted away when the mine closed. The name derives...
