McDame, Henry


McDAME, Henry, prospector (b Bahamas; d circa 1900). He was a BLACK man who was attracted to BC in 1858 by the GOLD RUSH to the FRASER R; he then pursued his search for GOLD in the CARIBOO in the 1860s and the Omineca in 1870. In the Omineca he had a hand in discovering the rich deposits on Germansen Crk. By 1874 he had moved on to DEASE LK. Travelling north, he made his way up the Dease R and followed the creek that now bears his name, where he found evidence of gold. His discovery touched off...
