MAKELA, Augusti Bernhard "Austin," Finnish socialist, community leader (b 12 July 1863, Finland; d 28 Feb 1932, Sointula). He was a schoolteacher in his native Finland, where he was prominent in the socialist movement. Eventually he became a journalist and associate of Matti KURIKKA. In 1901 he came to BC to join Kurikka at his utopian community at SOINTULA. Makela became joint editor of the Finnish-language newspaper Aika (Time) and secretary of the Kalevan Kansa Colonization Co. More...
