Magpie


MAGPIE, black-billed (Pica pica), is the only type of magpie found in Canada. In BC it is most common in the southern Interior. A member of the CROW family, it is a large, long-tailed, short-winged bird with black plumage above and a white belly. Magpies build large nests in trees; the nest consists of a hooded mound of sticks and other material surrounding a mud base. It has more than one entrance and takes up to 6 weeks to build.
