LAPÉROUSE, Jean-François Galaup, Comte de, naval officer (b 23 Aug 1741, Albi, France; d June 1788, Melanesia). He joined the French navy at age 15 and served with distinction for the rest of his life, taking part in many naval operations during the long years of conflict between France and England during the last half of the 18th century.
