JUDO was brought to BC by Shigetake "Steve" Sasaki in 1924 when he opened the VANCOUVER Judo Club, the first in Canada, 2 years after immigrating from Japan. In the 1930s Sasaki taught judo to the RCMP and in 1936 he joined the founder of the martial art on a European outreach tour. During WWII Sasaki was interned (see JAPANESE, RELOCATION OF) but in the internment camps he continued to teach judo.
