Johnston, Rita Margaret (Leichert)

JOHNSTON, Rita Margaret (Leichert), politician, premier 2 Apr–5 Nov 1991 (b 22 Apr 1935, Melville, SK). She came to BC as a child and began her political career as an alderman in SURREY in 1969, the same year that Bill VANDER ZALM became mayor. In 1983 she entered provincial politics when she was elected SOCIAL CREDIT MLA for Surrey.
