INVERNESS, 14 km south of PRINCE RUPERT at the mouth of the SKEENA R, was the first SALMON CANNERY north of the FRASER R. It was built by North Western Commercial Co on the site of Woodcock's Landing, an early inn and trading post, and subsequently owned by Turner, Beeton and J.H. Todd. Operations began in 1876. Twice the cannery burned to the ground and was rebuilt. Linked to the GRAND TRUNK PACIFIC RWY in 1914, the plant closed in 1950 and was destroyed by fire in 1973. Its peak year was...
