Brackendale

BRACKENDALE, pop 1,497, is a residential community beside the SQUAMISH R, 10 km north of SQUAMISH. It is named either for John Bracken, an early settler, or for the bracken FERN that grows in abundance. Hop farming (see AGRICULTURE) was important early in the century, along with LOGGING. During the winter, one of the world's largest populations of bald EAGLES congregate here to feed on SALMON in the river. A 6 sq km provincial reserve was created in 1996 to protect the eagles' habitat.
