Michael McCarthy took this lovely photo of a Kermode bear on the north coast. Michael is a travel writer whose work can be found at www.intentional-traveler.com.

The kermode is actually a subspecies of the black bear. It was named after Dr. Francis Kermode, director of the Royal BC Museum, in 1905. It is also known as the spirit bear, for obvious reasons.
