Texada Book in the Works

While on a visit to Powell River last week I met local writer Heather Harbord, who is at work on a history of Texada Island. Heather reminded me that Texada was the centre of one of BC's first political scandals involving our eccentric second premier Amor de Cosmos, his attorney general George Walkem, and a syndicate of speculators looking to make a killing from Texada's newly-discovered iron ore deposits. It was a shady affair, though a subsequent royal commission cleared de Cosmos and Walkem of any wrongdoing.

For the Byzantine details, we'll have to wait for Heather's book. Meanwhile, coastal history buffs will enjoy her previous bestseller, Desolation Sound: A History, from Harbour Publishing.
