Jackscrew Island


Jackscrew Island (48˚57'00" 123˚35'00" Just NE of N end of Saltspring I, Gulf Is). A jackscrew is a screw-operated hydraulic device widely used for lifting or exerting pressure. In the aviation industry, the word refers to a long rod in the tail of an aircraft that drives the horizontal stabilizer. The island’s peculiar terrain, with its miniature ridges and valleys, must have reminded someone of the threads of a jackscrew. The island was formerly used as a First Nation burial ground.
