Lord Stanley Keeps His Park

Now that the federal government has put the kibosh on a new name for Stanley Park, perhaps planners will consider beefing up signage, etc., to emphasize the long Aboriginal presence in the park (which is, I imagine, all anyone wanted anyway).

Anyone interested in learning about that presence should track down a copy of Jean Barman's wonderful book, Stanley Park's Secret (Harbour Publishing), in which she tells the story of the "forgotten" people who lived around the edges of the park before they were evicted by governments intent on prettifying the space.
